The Waterworks Museum

Do you believe in miracles? I do. Indeed,  I experience a miracle every day. After I stumble  out of bed to answer my bladder’s insistent demand, I walk into my kitchen,   turn on the tap and, voila, a glass of clear, clean water appears. .Now, you probably just take this  for granted, but it is a true miracle. Not dependent on some mystical intervention, but on years of experience and progress in engineering, chemistry and a variety of earth sciences, that glass of water is truly a a miracle of modern life and I would encourage you to regard it as such.

Which brings us, of course, to our next place for you to visit: The Waterworks Museum at  2450 Beacon St., Boston (close to Boston College).

Free tours Fri-Sun at 11:30 and 1:30

Free tours Fri-Sun at 11:30 and 1:30

Special Access Tours ($20 pp) at 2:30 Fri-Sun

First of all, before you enter the museum take a good look at the building. It is a wonderful example of what is known as Richardson-Romanesque architecture (Trinity church in Boston is another example).  Long closed, it is another miracle that it was not destroyed over the years, but was preserved and enhanced as part of the development of nearby Waterworks Museum Condominiums. Thr “High Service Pumping Station” (now the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum) was designed between 1886 and 1889. The Pumping Station included a laboratory to study the safety of the water – the first in country dedicated to biological analysis of the water the citizens of Boston would consume. The interior of the building is an exquisite example of Victorian architecture and engineering. This is a wonderful place to take visitors to Boston. The museum is free and open Wednesdays –  Sundays (11 – 4) with  free tours Fri-Sun at 11:30 and 1:30.  There are also special access tours ($20 per person)  Fri, Sat & Sun at 2:30 and which take you into the heart of Victorian pumps. This really is a special place and if you haven’t been there for a while, now is the time to explore it once again.,  Now, if only I could sleep through an entire night without any alarms from my bladder, THAT would be a REAL MIRACLE
